Gisela Wendling and I are bringing our Designing & Leading Change three day intensive workshop to Vienna next April 28-30. Marcus Engleberger,a GLEN Member from Vienna is hosting it at a wonderful retreat center he has found. It’s organized around Gisela and my new Seven Challenges of Change Model, thoroughly described in our book Visual Consulting: Designing& Leading Change, which everyone will get in the workshop. Check out this link to get the details.

Hi everyone, My second post in this series on recovering an indigenous view of the world is complete. In this post I reflect on my personal experience. It describes the journey into the dance through special encounters with people and animals and dreams and then what it was like to dance to the tree of life while supporting the Sundancers who were fasting and making offerings.

I close with some reflections on living life as ceremony.

Thanks for posting this, Phil. Fascinating. Although they don’t mention it, might organoids allow scientists to reduce the testing they do on the brains of animals?

Thank you so much for linking us to this, John. I am fascinated by a number of things in this piece including that it supports the idea of looking at brains as networks and challenges the current “outside-in paradigm,” i.e., taking some stimulus or experience in the world and trying to find the neural correlates for it inside the brain. Of course, I am now very curious about exploring the inside out approach that looks at the patterns of activity across the brain (i.e., networks) and how they generate multiple aspects of human experience. An evocative thought in this piece: “Brains do not process information, they create it!” So much to learn and so much not known. Thanks again!

Here’s a piece on Medium about difficulties understanding the brain and how it works…seems like it’s more at a micro level than what we are looking at in this exchange. They are talking about figuring out how those billions of neurons facilitate all manner of stuff like “reasoning” (whatever that means 😉 and movement and so on. Still might be relevant here…

In this series of posts, of which this one is the first, I share about my experience of participating in a Cree Sundance near Calgary, Canada. POST 1: In this post, I reflect on the generative and challenging tensions that are part of crossing cultural boundaries and world views and why it is important to explore them. POST 2: Here I describe what I experienced as part of allowing myself to become deeply immersed into the Cree Sundance. POST 3: Finally, I speak about my personal intentions for going and how it is deepening my inner healing journey and personal growth. It explores the theme of forgiveness without approval in the face of misuse of power and authority.

Here is the link to the first post. Or you can cut and paste the link as well: http://giselawendling.com/recovering-an-indigenous-view-of-the-world-reflections-on-a-cree-sundance-post-1/.

One question for us to consider is how might this relate to our exploration of leading as sacred practice or leading with a sacred intend?

Please share your reflection

Many months later…I think we are seeing the re-surfacing of aspects of this issue Phil raises about physical suffering in the emergence of multiple 2020 presidential candidates advocating for various forms of social democracy (or pieces of it at least).

The Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark) originated the social-democratic nation-state in contemporary times. Part of the idea was that happiness overall increases when there is less inequality in a society. And there is research and statistics, by now, to bear that out.

This overall happiness (“well-being,” really) was seen as a desirable social outcome, desirable enough to be encoded in politics and policy, in cultural norms (this is who we are, this is what we do).

This was a choice intentionally made, among many possible choices, which shows that it is possible for large social groups (far larger than any in aboriginal times that is) to choose common well-being as a high priority social outcome.

…about calmness being contagious and concepts and theories around co-regulation.

Even if fear and anger are more virulent, just knowing that other emotional-somatic states are also “contagious” is helpful, to me anyhow.
